5 Chinese New Year words beginners love

Bright red envelopes, family dinners, and a few lucky phrases — culture is the sweetest doorway into Mandarin.

1. 新年快乐 · Xīnnián kuàilè

“Happy New Year!” The classic greeting. Kids can shout it with a smile when they see red decorations.

2. 红包 · Hóngbāo

Red envelope — the gift of luck (and often a little money) from elders. A favorite vocabulary word for every age.

3. 恭喜发财 · Gōngxǐ fācái

“Wishing you prosperity.” Fun to say, festive to hear — great for teens and adults joining family celebrations.

4. 饺子 · Jiǎozi

Dumplings! Food words stick because they connect to taste and tradition. Practice tones while you cook or order.

5. 福 · Fú

“Good fortune.” You may see this character displayed upside down because 倒 (dào, “upside down”) sounds like 到 (dào, “to arrive”) — suggesting that good fortune has arrived.

In Sisi’s lessons, culture isn’t a side note — it’s woven into speaking practice so Mandarin feels alive, not like a textbook checklist.
