Exam Prep
HSK & YCT preparation in Minneapolis
Structured Mandarin exam prep with a licensed native teacher — syllabus coverage by level, vocabulary drilling, and timed practice tests with clear feedback before test day.
HSK levels explained
HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the official Chinese proficiency exam used by universities, employers, and scholarship programs. Levels 1–6 measure listening, reading, and writing, with vocabulary targets roughly from about 150 words at HSK 1 to 5,000+ at HSK 6.
Most students prepare with a mix of level vocabulary, listening drills, reading practice, and timed mock exams in the months before the test. Private lessons make it easier to focus on the exact sections where scores are slipping.
YCT vs. HSK: which does your child need?
YCT (Youth Chinese Test) is designed for younger K–12 learners and emphasizes everyday vocabulary and communication. HSK is the standard exam path for older teens, adults, and formal academic or work requirements.
Many Minneapolis families start children with YCT, then transition to HSK in the teen years. Siwen helps you choose the right track based on age, school goals, and timeline.
How exam prep lessons work
- Full syllabus coverage matched to your target level
- Targeted vocabulary drilling for high-frequency exam words
- Listening and reading practice in exam-style formats
- Timed practice tests with specific feedback
- Speaking support when your level or school program requires it
Exam prep is usually best as private 1-on-1 lessons ($50/hour) so pacing matches your test date. Small-group options ($35/hour) can work when students share the same level and timeline.
